Keeping a first aid kit in your home is as important for your pet as it is for the rest of your family. Make sure your pet’s first aid kit is in a convenient location in your home, but be sure it is out of reach of children and pets.

You will probably want to include the following items in your Pet First Aid Kit:

•    Absorbent cotton – to help stop bleeding
•    Non-stinging iodine solution (dilute with water) to cleanse wounds
•    Medical tape – to use as a bandage adhesive
•    Gauze bandage rolls – can be used on wounds and also as an emergency leash
•    Sharp scissors with rounded safety tips
•    Tweezers – to remove thorns, splinters and ticks
•    Antihistamine for insect bites
•    First aid ointment
•    Cotton swabs – to cleanse your pet’s ears or to apply ointment
•    An extra collar with tags and leash
•    An extra copy of your pet’s medical records
•    Photos of your pet (in case your pet gets lost)
•    Your veterinarian’s name, address, phone number and emergency hours

Please remember that first aid performed on your pet at home is not a substitute for a professional veterinarian.  Even though you may have given first aid to your pet at home, always call your veterinarian about the situation.  He or she may feel it is best to see your dog to make sure your dog can and will recover quickly from the mishap
