The chilling months of winter can cause concern for many pet owners. How do you keep your pet healthy and safe in cold and snowy weather?
Never let your dog off the leash when there is snow and ice on the ground, especially during a snowstorm. More dogs are lost during the winter than any other season because they can lose their scent easily.
The first thing to be aware of during the winter is your dog’s feet. After spending time outside, be sure to dry and clean his paws. This will help avoid tiny cuts and cracked footpads. Use petroleum jelly to prevent further cracking. When you are outside, be aware of rock salt, which may irritate your dog’s footpads.
Frostbite is a great concern during the winter as well. Don’t leave your dog outdoors for too long as frostbite may affect its ears, tail and feet. If your dog is outside or exercises frequently, feed him a high-calorie diet which will maintain his body fat and keep him warmer. If your dog has short hair or is very small, consider dressing him in a sweater or coat. There are special coats and even winter boots available for dogs.
Just like humans, dogs get more dehydrated during the winter and should have access to plenty of fresh water. Adequate shelter is especially necessary during the winter months. Your dog’s bed should be warm and dry and in a location that is draft-free.
Follow these tips and you and your dog will have an enjoyable winter season!
